Dependency bots are useful for repository-specific upgrades, while a registry monitor helps platform teams watch a curated package set across several systems. The npm Package Scraper resolves exact names to their latest published metadata.

Define an explicit watchlist

Use package names rather than discovery queries when the monitored population must stay fixed.

{
  "queries": [],
  "packageNames": ["react", "next", "typescript", "vite"],
  "maxResultsPerQuery": 20
}

Run the input once and verify every expected name. Save it as an Apify Task and schedule a cadence appropriate for your release process. A missing package produces a warning and is skipped, so validate the returned count before accepting a snapshot.

Detect meaningful changes

Store the latest successful row by package name and compare its version with the previous successful row. Use semantic-version parsing rather than string sorting: 10.0.0 is newer than 9.9.9 even though lexical order can disagree.

A detected version is a notification, not an automatic approval. Fetch release notes from the linked repository, check runtime and peer-dependency compatibility, assess security impact, and run the application's tests. Scoped names and unscoped names are distinct identifiers.

Retain run ID, collection time, version, license, repository URL, and maintainers in the event record. If a source request fails or the expected count is incomplete, keep the previous state and flag a monitoring gap. Do not send “package removed” alerts from a failed run. Route valid changes to the team's issue tracker, chat channel, or dependency workflow with enough context for a human to evaluate the release.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when a package name is missing?

The Actor logs a warning, skips that exact name, and continues processing the remaining input.

Does a new version mean I should upgrade immediately?

No. Review release notes, compatibility, tests, and security policy before changing production dependencies.
