Package discovery is easy; establishing that a library is suitable and maintained requires evidence from several sources. The npm Package Scraper creates a first-pass shortlist with registry metadata and project links.

Search by the actual job

Describe the capability rather than a favored implementation. This reduces confirmation bias and surfaces smaller alternatives.

  "queries": ["data visualization chart"],
  "packageNames": [],
  "maxResultsPerQuery": 100
}

Use the returned maintenance, quality, popularity, downloads, version, publisher, maintainers, repository, homepage, keywords, and description as screening columns. Remove packages that solve a different problem before ranking anything.

Verify maintenance outside the score

Open repository links and review recent releases, issue response, pull-request activity, documentation, ownership changes, supported runtimes, and peer dependencies. Confirm the license fits your distribution model. Run a security audit using current advisories; npm discovery data is not a vulnerability assessment.

A healthy small library can have fewer downloads than an abandoned transitive dependency. Conversely, recent commits do not guarantee stable releases or good API design. Write the selection criteria before seeing the candidates and record why each finalist passes.

For strategic research, schedule the same query quarterly and retain results. Changes in rank or download estimates can surface ecosystem movement, but missing rows may only have fallen beyond the cap. Store query and timestamp with every observation.

The final technical evaluation should include a prototype in your application, bundle and runtime impact, failure behavior, TypeScript quality when relevant, and an exit plan. Registry data narrows the field; engineering evidence determines adoption.

Frequently asked questions

Is the npm maintenance score definitive?

No. It is one registry signal and should be combined with repository, release, issue, and compatibility review.

Can this check vulnerabilities?

It does not provide an advisory verdict; use a current security scanner and advisory source separately.
