International poverty comparisons can become misleading when they mix thresholds, price bases, survey years, modeled estimates, and population groups. The UN SDG Indicators Scraper keeps the official series definition and reporting metadata attached to each observation.

Hold the series constant

Write the comparison question before selecting countries. A policy baseline, regional benchmark, and historical trend require different year and coverage rules. Precommitting to those rules reduces the temptation to choose whichever observation produces the cleanest ranking.

Compare countries only within the same series code and unit. Choose a shared year, or label each country's observation year prominently. Keep Nature visible because a global monitoring estimate and a country-reported value can follow different production processes. Dimensions such as age, sex, and location must also match.

Footnotes are part of the evidence, not optional decoration. They may identify source surveys, access dates, or methodological details that explain an apparent discontinuity. Preserve upper and lower bounds when provided and avoid ranking tiny differences as precise facts.

For trend analysis, construct country panels with explicit gaps rather than filling missing years automatically. If interpolation is necessary for a model, store it as a separate derived value and document the method. Link every published figure to the official record and keep the raw display value. These safeguards make the comparison useful for development research without converting sparse, qualified statistics into a false league table.
