Use Official UN SDG Data for ESG Reporting

ESG reports often cite the Sustainable Development Goals, but a goal icon alone is not evidence. Country-level UN observations can provide operating context for poverty, health, education, infrastructure, or other themes. Keep context separate from attribution

Define a claim register connecting each narrative statement to its company evidence, contextual SDG series, transformation, and reviewer. This makes it obvious when national statistics are being used as background rather than proof of corporate impact.

Select series relevant to the markets and impacts under review, then collect a consistent time window.

Country conditions do not prove that a company caused an outcome or managed a risk effectively. Store official SDG observations in a context layer, company disclosures in an entity layer, and the analytical linkage in a documented assessment layer. Every claim should identify which layer supports it.

Preserve data nature, dimensions, year, source, and footnotes. Avoid comparing countries on different years without disclosure, and do not turn missing observations into zero scores. If a rating model normalizes or weights series, version that methodology and expose coverage.

For recurring reports, refresh the official layer on a controlled schedule and flag revisions before republishing conclusions. This approach makes SDG references more substantive while respecting the boundary between national development statistics and organization-specific ESG performance.
