Compare Life Expectancy by Country with WHO Data

Country life-expectancy tables look simple, yet they can mix years, sexes, sources, and estimates without saying so. The WHO Global Health Observatory Data Scraper makes those comparison dimensions explicit.

Align year and sex before ranking

Add a coverage appendix to every published comparison. List the indicator code, shared year, sex dimension, country set, extraction date, and whether values are estimated. Readers can then distinguish a methodological choice from a health outcome and reproduce the table independently.

Choose the latest year shared by all countries rather than selecting each country's newest observation independently. Otherwise the ranking can compare different periods. Use SEX_BTSX for a combined-sex view and keep male and female values in separate analyses unless the question explicitly concerns the gap.

Display the numeric estimate with its lower and upper bounds. If intervals overlap, avoid overclaiming a precise rank. Country code, country name, region, WHO update date, and source link should travel with exported charts or tables.

Life expectancy is a summary outcome, not an explanation. Differences can reflect mortality patterns, conflict, health systems, income, measurement, and modeling. Join additional indicators only after reviewing their definitions and coverage. Keep raw observations immutable, build comparison views downstream, and record the transformation used to select a common year. This makes the benchmark reproducible when WHO publishes new estimates or revises an older series.
